CHAPTER 27 - LESSER VOWS

Thy bones infused with faith shall stand firm. For just as the horde of blood washed over us and stood we there upon that rock, so too shall thy rock be found to stand upon. Make thyself a bastion upon a rock such as that was. For there, Pariantür stands as witness and proclamation of that fateful time.

—Gospel of St. Ikhail 22:5

THE NEXT MORNING, JINED awoke to a flurry of activity. Cävian came and woke him. Duty. Now.

Jined rose, dressed, and made his way to the chapel. There, the Prima Pater, always calm, always jovial, was pacing the center, fuming. Both Pater Segundii looked on. None looked like they had slept.

“What kind of a fool do they take me for? How much ground have we lost due to Gui’s foolishness?! First that fool of a King Vorso more than wasted my time, and now Duke Ergis is putting rocks in the mill and calling it grain.”

Everybody watched him silently. Gallahan Pír stepped forward. Dorian spun to look at him.

“Prima Pater. You have an audience. Can we sit down and discuss this?”

“Very well. Everyone of Primus or higher stays. The rest of you, leave. Guards, man the doors. I don’t want anyone but you eavesdropping.”

Jined and the other guards left and took their posts down the halls that surrounded the room. Jined was assigned a side door to himself, in view of the twins at the next door. Jined was able to hear very well what was said, though the way the twins signed to one another it seemed as though he was the only one who might actually be able to pick anything up.

The leadership on the other side of the door, by Jined’s reckoning, would number ten. He could hear them moving chairs and benches around into a council of sorts. Everyone worked in whispers. Then, they all sat. Pater Segundus Pír opened the meeting.

“Aeger, you will act as secretary and record the proceedings. All others bear witness to the meeting. Let it be titled the Rämmon Council, Hrelgren Imperial Year 2225.”

Then, he proceeded to name off those present.

“Let me first begin by saying that I am proud of each and every one of you,” Dorian spoke softly, more like his usual self. “I personally asked each of you here for a reason, and you have fulfilled my hopes and dreams admirably. Klamm, Yunt, Polun, you have seamlessly taken care of our finances and food. I greatly appreciate it. Gallahan, your work, as always, is perfect, and the discovery of this holy book, hidden right under our noses, may very well justify the whole trip. Nichal, your guards have performed impeccably, and against the vül, most notably.

“Primus Cautese, we could not have made this trip without your preparations. And your ability to work between nations is the reason you are the Primus of Internal Affairs. Let it be known, I hold nothing against you in this situation. Secrets kept from you were kept from all of us.
